At both schools, three classes (primary 4, 5 & 6) were taken. Besides the major topic, “Sex Education”, the pupils were also given talks on “Values” and “Leadership”. The basics of sex education were discussed. Emphasis was laid on the need for the pupils to understand their uniqueness (that is, a male child being different from a female child), and they should also recognise that they are special. They were equally reminded to keep their private parts private and never to engage in any sort of game or play that may result in abuse of themselves. They were equally encouraged to report any activity that is suggestive of an abuse. They were informed of the proper line of reporting (that is, to your class teacher, school counsellor, head teacher et cetera).
The need for the pupils to uphold the right values, which will help them have a smooth sail through school and life in general, was discussed. Among the values mentioned are: love, honesty, and equality. Pupils were encouraged to love God, their parents, country, themselves as well as their neighbours. They were told that honesty would help them to tell the truth at all times. They will equally learn to safeguard other people’s belongings if they are honest. Equality will help them treat all human beings with dignity. They were told never to look down on others irrespective of their backgrounds.
Furthermore, leadership was also treated. Background was given to what leadership was all about; which involved the ability to direct the affairs of others or lead others into achieving set goals or objectives. A brief historical background was given on Nigeria leaders (particularly those who fought for Nigeria independence like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo). The pupils were also encouraged to imbibe the qualities of good leaders, which include but are not limited to: discipline, integrity, courage, and resilience.
