BeamLight Foundation Coaching/Mentoring class for Preteens and Teens held on Saturday, 9th June 2018 focused on helping participants learn Tips for Academic Excellence and Anger Management. Aunt Jumoke Akpata gave the following as tips that can assist the youngsters achieve academic excellence: Regular attendance of classes, having the right tools (notebooks, pens, textbooks, calender to help you keep track of assignments etc), paying attention in class, taking notes, studying daily, join a study group, prepare for exams, complete assignments on time, get enough sleep, organise everything, make and maintain a study place, set high standards for yourself etc. Uncle Emmanuel Ogbuotobo summarised the points earlier stated by aunt Jumoke in what he called “The Ten Commandments of Academic Excellence.”
Aunt Joy Obehi spoke on Anger Management: Mastering Your Emotions. She mentioned the following as signs that a child may have anger issue: Frequent angry outbursts, unable to explain feelings when upset, trouble calming down when frustrated or upset, resort to using physical aggression such as hitting, fighting etc, not caring about other people’s feelings, not accepting responsibility for his aggression etc. She emphasised the need for teens to control their anger as it is a letter away from “danger”. She equally stated that the way will interpret events affect our emotions; hence, we should always learn to interpret events positively. She gave the following as tips to manage anger: Think before you speak, once you are calm, express your anger, get some exercise, take a timeout, identify possible solutions, stick with ‘I’ statements (that is, avoid criticising or blaming others), don’t hold a grudge, use humour to release tension, practise relaxation skills and know when to seek help. She added biblical perspective to anger management by citing Ephesians 4:26-27 (“In your anger do not sin; do not let the sun go down while you are still angry” – NIV) and James 1:19-20 (“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” -NIV).
